Getting to know Calmbirth Educator Cherie Chugg

Cherie Chugg is our one and only Calmbirth Educator in Tasmania. She is passionate about birth and works as a doula and Calmbirth Educator in Launceston.

Supporting women as a doula was not enough for me I wanted to reach a wider group of people and I wanted to teach more couples about how to be prepared for childbirth. I knew from my own personal experience that having an understanding of what was going to be happening in my body helped eliminate any fears I had around childbirth.

My name is… I’m Cherie and I am a Calmbirth Educator in Launceston, Tasmania.

I work at…I work from home teaching Calmbirth and I am also a qualified doula. Currently, I am the only Calmbirth Educator in Tasmania. I started my working life as a hairdresser and still run a in home hair salon a couple of days a week for family and friends. I am a serious soccer mum and volunteer at our local soccer club during the soccer season.

Why I became a Calmbirth Educator...Supporting women as a doula was not enough for me I wanted to reach a wider group of people and I wanted to teach more couples about how to be prepared for childbirth. I knew from my own personal experience that having an understanding of what was going to be happening in my body helped eliminate any fears I had around childbirth. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing midwife that spent time with me every month explaining and teaching me the things I needed to know to prepare me for birth. I had people beside me that understood what was going on and they could support, encourage and believe in me through the process.  Calmbirth teaches this, it gives the women & her partner the knowledge they need to feel calm during the preparation time and gives them the tools for the when the time comes.

What I do to relax when I’m not working…I love the beach, reading, and catching up with family & friends.

What I’m reading…A boy and his dog at the end of the world by C.A. Fletcher. It’s my current bookclub read.

Places I have travelled…Fiji, Europe, UK, Philippines, New Zealand, Singapore, & Dubai.

I can’t live without – My family.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…Seeing the confidence in the couples grow and change so much from the start of class one compared to the end of class four.

If I had to describe my own birth experiences in 4 words…Hard work, calm, & supported.

The three essential things you need to take with you into labour are…Good support, confidence & tools to be able to relax.

My most memorable moment as a Calmbirth Educator…I don’t actually have one that stands out but receiving birth stories I absolutely love.
